ROLLINGSTONE.COM: Mandy Moore has returned to pop with her first new song in a decade, “When I Wasn’t Watching.” The single is the first off a forthcoming full-length album.

Produced by Mike Viola (Jenny Lewis, Andrew McMahon), Moore channels Seventies California pop for the breezy, refreshing new song. In the video, Moore appears alone, performing the song through a series of gorgeous vignettes, including a pool and sepia-toned room.

In a statement, Moore revealed the inspiration for the song. “I think everyone’s had the experience of feeling lost and not quite understanding how you’ve found yourself at a certain point in your life. And I think the key is not to judge yourself for that. I’m a big believer in the idea that what you’ve journeyed through is ultimately going to factor into the person you become, and how you’ll greet whatever big challenge you face next.”

Moore hasn’t revealed further details on what will be her first album since 2009’s Amanda Leigh. Since then, Moore’s music has been mostly tied to soundtracks for her acting projects, including 2010’s Tangled and her hit show This Is Us, for which she covered Linda Ronstad’s “Willin’” in 2017.

“The idea of diving back into music after so much time and personal change was really intimidating to me for a while,” she said in a statement. “But then I finally realized: I’m the only person who can make this move. It all has to start with me.”

This Is Us will return for its fourth season later this month. She will also appear in the action film Midway alongside Nick Jonas, Woody Harrelson and Dennis Quaid later this year.

BILLBOARD.COM: Mandy Moore leads an all-star cast in the gripping trailer for the WWII drama Midway that dropped Thursday morning (Sept. 12). In the two-and-a-half-minute preview of the Roland Emmerich-directed film, due out on Veteran’s Day weekend (Nov. 8), the singer and This Is Us star portrays Anne Best, wife of Lt. Dick Best, played by British actor Ed Skrein (Game of Thrones, Deadpool).

The movie is based on the real events following the surprise Dec. 1, 1941, bombing of Pearl Harbor in Honolulu, Hawaii, by the Japanese Navy, which led to the U.S. entering the war the next day. With a sense of the tension and angst leading up to the epic June 1942 showdown in the air and sea over the Midway Atoll, the clip provides brief glimpses of the star-packed cast, which includes scenes of a mustachioed Nick Jonas as aviation machinist Bruno Gaido, as well as stars Patrick Wilson, Luke Evans, Aaron Eckhart, Woody Harrelson and Dennis Quaid.

The cast for the film from legendarily bombtastic director/producer Emmerich (Independence Day, White House Down and Godzilla), also includes Darren Criss, Jake Weber (Homeland), Brennan Brown (Chicago Med), Alexander Ludwig (The Hunger Games), Tadanobu Sato (47 Ronin), Keean Johnson (Alita: Battle Angel), Jun Kunimura (Kill Bill: Volume 1) and many more.

Midway is one of the biggest live-action, big-budget starring movie roles for Moore, who has been nominated for a Golden Globe and Emmy for her role as Rebecca Pearson on the NBC drama This Is Us and who revealed in June that she’s working on her first new album in a decade with the aid of husband Dawes singer/guitarist Taylor Goldsmith.
